" Is there a safe part of the body to stab someone? Yes said the children..."

A shocked Camberwell youth worker posed the question to a group of secondary school children last week and was surprised when half of the room raised their hands and said yes. Junior Smart, one of the leaders for the St Giles Trust SOS project in Camberwell, asked the question and an alarming majority believed that a stab wound to the leg or shoulder would not be serious.
The Camberwell based project leader then reminded the class that Damilola had also been stabbed in the leg with a broken bottle and explained  "How easy it is to do something theres no going back from". Mr Smart was reported to have said that "The problem is often they think there are no real consequences for sosme very serious actions".
The SOS Plus project which sends ex-offenders volunteers into schools to highlight the risks of being involved in gangs was set up by Junior  a year ago to "demystify" the so called glamour of being caught up in criminal lifestyles.
In my own humble opinion I feel that its great that projects like The St Giles Trust are informing young people of the consequences of a criminal lifestyle...However I am not shocked or surprised that pupils in the area have a  warped sense of reality. Lets face the facts, Southwark and Lambeth alone has had over a thousand non lethal stabbings between April and October last year.

  1. A stabbing is a stabbing, and the point is to injure, hurt and ultimately kill. Why else would you take a weapon to someone. Sadly I have to agree, I'm not suprised either that children are starting to believe that there are 'safe' ways to stab people as knife related crime is so rife. It's such a shame and as adults we have a responsibility to make these kids aware that violence full stop is not acceptable.

  3. I am not surprising either that children are starting to believe that there are 'safe' ways to stab people because most of the children spend a vast amount of time watching horror movies or playing deadly computer games. Once more, adults are resposible for these acts committed by children

  4. I'm not for indoctrination, I'm entirely against it, but there does need to be a major upheaval in the mindsets of certain youths so they stop thinking it's 'cool' to be 'strapped' or that it's necessary. If their mindset was less hostile from young ages, there wouldn't be that feeling of needed a 'tool' to feel secure walking down the road. I understand that there are also those that simply enjoy destruction and just take pleasure in harming others but is this not yet another product of the promotion of violence?

  5. This shocks me that teenagers are somehow taking precautions to stab someone so that no major damage is done. As if stabbing someone isn't bad enough, stabbing them and making sure they are safe at the same time is just shocking. Put the knifes down kids, there are only two outcomes if you carry on doing this.
